Merit Badges

 What are Merit Badges?

Merit Badges are specialized badges that a Scout must earn to achieve certain requirements in the higher ranks of Scouting. The purpose of Merit Badges is to allow Scouts to examine subjects to determine if they would like to further pursue them as a career or vocation. The Boy Scouts of America currently has over 130 Merit Badges with subjects in sports, crafts, science, trades, business, and future careers.

You must earn a minimum of 21 Merit Badges in order to earn the Rank of Eagle, 13 of them being required Merit Badges. You don’t have to wait till a certain Rank to begin earning Merit Badges, though some do have certain age recommendations. Merit Badges can be earned at Summer Camp, during Troop Meetings, or through personal study with a Merit Badge Counselor.
